Trip on the Rhaetian Railway
The ride over the Albula Pass from Chur, Thusis or Tiefencastel to St. Moritz und zurück oder optional weiter over the Bernina Pass to Tirano and back, or optionally continuing on the Italian border, is one of the most spectacular railway routes in the world and has UNESCO World Heritage status, not least because of the outstanding engineering achievements that have been accomplished here.
Early bookers and last-minute bookers outside the peak season can find real bargains. Even if you're spontaneous, it's worth taking the trip at least once in your life.
Tip for those who want to see something in the Engadin without a car: Take the Berninaexpress to Morteratsch station and walk along the mostly flat hiking trail for about 3 km to the Morteratsch Glacier ! The nature trail provides interesting facts about the glacier and the visible effects of climate change and leads through impressive scenery!
Albulabahn Railway Museum
Also worth seeing is the Albula Railway Museum, which provides a fascinating insight into the history of this spectacular railway line.
Decommissioned Swiss military bunkers
In the neighbouring Albula Valley, several disused mountain fortifications can be visited on guided tours.
Visit to the city of Chur
In Chur, the capital of the canton of Graubünden and Switzerland's oldest town, you will find shopping opportunities and restaurants in the pretty old town , as well as numerous museums with fascinating exhibitions on the early history of Graubünden, particularly the Romans in the region, and world-famous contemporary artists. It takes about an hour to drive from Tinizong to Chur, or you can take public transport to Tiefencastel and from there take the Rhaetian Railway to Chur.
Viamala Gorge
Outside Val Surses, the Viamala Gorge, through which the Hinterrhein river flows for around 8 km between Zillis-Reischen and Thusis, is definitely worth seeing. You can park at the visitor centre, but in high season we recommend travelling by post bus. The gorge can also be explored on foot.
Reformed Church of St. Martin in Zillis-Reischen
The church in the neighbouring Rheinwald Valley (Viamala region) is worth seeing for its painted ceiling. The depictions of fantastical mythical creatures, Jonah and the life of Christ were created in the 12th century and are unique. Before visiting the church, it is also worth visiting the exhibition in the Zillis-Reischen municipal administration office.
